Jim Gilbert grew up a "Navy brat" whose father moved the family from place to place across America. Along the way, he learned to love reading and to tell a good story. He eventually settled down in a small town just south of Atlanta, Georgia, where he went to college and became a teacher, a professional artist, and a stage actor. He later found his way into writing, beginning with small stories shared with friends before moving on to short stories and cartoons written for a fan magazine for a popular series of fantasy novels. He published his first novel, A Host of Ghosts, to rave reviews. Ghosts won the 2001 Dream Realm Award for Romantic Fantasy, and it was a finalist for the 2002 Eppie Award.
